We are recruiting for a highly skilled, creative and energetic Recreation Therapy Assistant with advanced critical thinking and interprofessional skills. As a member of the interprofessional team you will have the opportunity to provide care for adult patients (18+) with medically complex conditions. We are located at the Moir Family Centre for Complex Continuing Care at the Queensway Health Centre (located at 150 Sherway Drive in West Toronto).

Recreation Therapy utilizes recreation and leisure opportunities to maximize independence, quality of life and promote an optimal leisure lifestyle.
Reporting to the Manager (Complex Continuing Care) the successful candidate will work under the direction of a Recreation Therapist to deliver recreation therapy services. The Recreation Therapy Assistant will assist in the delivery of goal-oriented programs and services to meet the leisure-related needs of patients. The Recreation Therapy Assistant is responsible for program development and program delivery in collaboration with the Recreation Therapist, as well as program observation and reporting, in addition to indirect client activities. The Recreation Therapy Assistant will provide input which will enable the Recreation Therapist to conduct assessments, develop intervention plans or evaluate a patient’s progress in relation to the intervention plan. The Recreation Therapy Assistant will practice in accordance with the Standards of Practice set out by Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO), and must also perform in accordance with the mission, vision, values and philosophy of THP.
Post-Secondary education in Therapeutic Recreation or related field from a recognized college
Membership with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario is an asset
Experience providing both individual and group recreation therapy intervention, including adapting therapeutic modalities to support medically complex patients, including individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities, and mental health needs
Reliable and self-directed, with demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with interprofessional team
Demonstrated leadership skills and evidence of continuing education
Awareness of or involvement in current Recreation Therapy practice provincially/nationally
Excellent organisational skills
Excellent interprofessional and communication skills
Current BCLS is recommended
Gentle Persuasive Approach training is an asset
Food Handler/Safety training or willing to obtain
Proficiency in creating documents in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required
Patient Care Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Works collaboratively with the Recreation Therapist and receives and implements Recreation Therapy treatment plans from Recreation Therapist
Participate, as part of the interprofessional team in provision of treatment and evaluation of each patient’s response to intervention
Communicate patient treatment program, and progress with other health care professionals involved in the patient’s care and share responsibility for development and implementation of interprofessional care where indicated
Participate in monthly professional practice meetings, business meetings and program meetings
Assist and participate in developing, implementing and practicing quality improvement within the program/unit, including Recreation Therapy program evaluation
Liaises with external care providers, including volunteers, to ensure care needs are met and safety is maintained
Maintain and research community partnerships with community programs/services for effective discharge planning, where indicated
Non-Patient Care Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Document current and timely progress notes for all referred patients while following the professional standards
Document required workload measurement data in a timely and accurate manner
Assist in the education, supervision and orientation of Recreation Therapy interns/students/volunteers in the hospital
Provide clinical teaching, mentoring and/or supervision for students. Engage with inter-professional education experiences with students of all health disciplines
Maintains recreation and leisure related equipment and supplies
Engage in ongoing reflective practice, stay current in the field of Recreation Therapy, and participate in opportunities for ongoing professional development. Participation and presentation at internal and/or external in-services and forums is encouraged.
